Here is the plugin order that works for 90% of vocal tracks. Each plugin has exactly one job. If it is not doing that job, bypass it.
1. EQ (subtractive only): Cut problem frequencies before compression so the compressor does not respond to frequencies you will remove anyway. High-pass filter at 80-120Hz to remove rumble. Cut muddy frequencies around 200-400Hz if present. Notch out any resonant frequencies you hear.
2. Compression (2-4dB of gain reduction): Smooth out dynamics so the vocal sits consistently in the mix. Use a moderate ratio (3:1 or 4:1), medium attack (10-30ms), and fast release (40-80ms). Adjust threshold until you see 2-4dB of gain reduction on the loudest phrases.
3. De-esser: Tame sibilance on S and T sounds. Set the frequency range to 5-8kHz and adjust threshold until the sibilance is controlled without dulling the vocal. Less is more — over-de-essing makes vocals sound lispy.
4. EQ (additive): Add presence and air. Boost around 3-6kHz for presence and clarity. Boost around 10-15kHz for air and openness. Cuts of more than 3dB should raise a red flag — you are probably compensating for a bad recording.
5. Saturation (optional): Add harmonic richness. A tape or tube saturation plugin adds warmth and helps the vocal cut through the mix. Apply lightly — you want warmth, not distortion.
6. Reverb (send, not insert): Send the vocal to a reverb bus rather than adding reverb directly. This keeps the dry signal clean and lets you control the reverb level independently. Use a short room or plate reverb with a 1-2 second decay.
7. Delay (send, not insert): A stereo delay on a send bus adds width and depth. A dotted-eighth note delay at 50-70ms adds space without muddying the vocal.
Adjusting the Chain for Different Vocal Types
Male and female vocals need different treatment in the chain. Male vocals often need more low-mid cleanup (200-400Hz) and less high-end boost. Female vocals may need less de-essing and more body added in the low-mids (150-250Hz).
Rapper vs. singer: Rappers typically need faster compression attack times (5-10ms) and less reverb. Singers benefit from slower attack (15-30ms) and more reverb space. Adjust the chain based on the delivery style, not just the genre.
